Funding Success for Toowoomba West Lions Club

Volunteers working on displays for Toowoomba’s annual Christmas Wonderland event will have access to a more secure and spacious workplace with the help of a grant from Round 4 of the Coalition Government’s Stronger Communities program.
Federal Member for Groom John McVeigh joined the team from Toowoomba West Lions Club at their Toowoomba workshop last week to acknowledge the funding and inspect the large concrete workspace recently installed to support Lions Club volunteers.
“Each year volunteers from the Toowoomba West Lions Club create a magical world of lights for local families to enjoy at Christmas time, and I am very pleased that the Government has been able to provide some support for that great work,” Dr McVeigh said.
“The funding from the Stronger Communities program has been used for the installation of a large concrete slab alongside the Lions Club workshop – to better enable volunteers to work on creations for the Wonderland event.
“Part of the funding will also go towards the installation of better CCTV security at the site – to ensure all the Christmas displays are safe and secure throughout the year.”
Toowoomba West Lions Club President Fiona Roberts said the Christmas Wonderland event was getting bigger every year.
“Around 84,000 people visited the Christmas Wonderland event in 2018, from around Toowoomba and the broader region,” she said.
“The volunteers work so hard throughout the year to create new displays and ensure existing lights and displays are maintained – the additional workspace will be a great help to the team.”
Dr McVeigh said the Stronger Communities program provided much-needed support for local community organisations across the country.
“I am very proud to be able to support local organisations in the Groom electorate like the Toowoomba West Lions Club. The volunteers that make up these organisations work tirelessly for the benefit of the wider community and I am truly grateful for what they do.”
