Groom Electorate to Benefit from Extra Warrego Highway Upgrades
Thursday, 20 September 2018
Motorists using the Warrego Highway west of Oakey will benefit from additional safety measures announced by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack this week.
Member for Groom John McVeigh welcomed the announcement of the extension of the Warrego Highway Upgrade Program (WHUP) saying all activities to improve safety and capacity along the highway would have significant benefits for the Groom electorate.
“The Warrego Highway is a major transport route servicing our region and it’s vital that it keeps pace with the increasing volume of regular and freight traffic,” Dr McVeigh said.
“Thanks to efficiencies in the delivery of the original WHUP, three new priority upgrade projects have been announced which include new works west of Oakey.
“These will include the construction of new stopping places on the westbound side and eastbound side, removing dangerous drop-off at the road’s edge and removing roadside hazards that can prove fatal in run-off-road crashes.”
Dr McVeigh said this new series of work will build on the improvements already delivered in the Groom electorate under the WHUP including:
- Safety improvements to the intersection at Sabine Road, Jondaryan;
- Additional overtaking lanes at regular intervals in both directions west of Oakey; and
- Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Toowoomba to Oakey duplication – to extend the 4-lane highway.
The three new projects announced this week bring the total number of projects along the WHUP west of Toowoomba to 18.
