FAQ - Religious Freedom Review
Tuesday, 21 May 2019
Late last year the Liberal and Nationals Government released our response to our Religious Freedom Review.
The Government announced plans to protect Australians of faith from discrimination and to safeguard the rights of religious Australians.
The Government also committed to addressing the issue of discrimination against children in schools on the basis of sexual orientation while also upholding the fundamental right to freedom of religion.
These changes would protect the right of religious schools and religious institutions to continue to teach and act in accordance with the tenets and doctrines of their faiths.
The Labor Party opposed this. During the election campaign the Labor Party continued their opposition.
The Labor Party’s Shadow Attorney-General made the commitment that “Labor would not give up” their opposition. He said a Shorten Labor Government will legislate “to remove the exemptions” for religious schools to practice their faith.
Only the Liberal and National Parties understand the fundamental importance of religious freedom to Australians of all faiths.
