Marriage Law Postal Survey result

Wednesday, 15 November 2017

From the Member for Groom Dr John McVeigh.

“The people of Groom have spoken with 80% of constituents taking part in the Marriage Law Postal Survey. The result is a very slim 50.8% majority voting "no" on the question of same sex marriage, which is in contrast to the emphatic 61.6% "yes" result at the national level.

“My own views are on the public record and I have maintained from the outset that the vote in Groom would be close. For months I have been meeting and contacting constituents who have deeply-held personal convictions either way and I believe it is now more important than ever that differing views continue to be respected.

"The Groom result is narrow and I have the elected responsibility of representing that reality in the pending parliamentary debate.

“At the same time I will be studying very, very carefully the detail of any and all Private Member’s Bills that may be tabled, together with amendments that may be presented in the coming weeks. Freedoms and anti-discrimination values in our community will be key aspects of my considerations.

“Our Government has an enormous policy agenda so it’s important that parliament now resolves the same sex marriage issue expeditiously in line with our commitments.

“As many constituents have stressed to me in recent months, energy costs, Centrelink, immigration, infrastructure, jobs and telecommunications are having the greatest impact on their day-to-day lives. These issues must now be our priority.”
